As with all circuits in the series, don’t be afraid to be heavy handed with the High Pass\/Low Cut control. While I find this to be an incredibly useful tool not found on many analog effects pedals, you’ll notice the way in which it’s employment in the case of these designs, is able to bring out a wide range of distinctive character within each of these 18 independent circuits. Between the dawn of recorded music and the 1980’s, various technologies employed in the record industry were advancing with exponential propulsion. As a result of that, as crazy as it may sound, to me there are quite drastic differences in the sonic characters of the output of music from say 1959 to the character of music released only 1 year later. Which brings us to 1959 1\/2... This particular setting targets sonic footprints of American cinema of the era, ala Hitchcock’s Psycho, as well as the likes of Wes Montgomery’s tone on records like Smokin’ At The Half Note.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e1962 - For me, this is Booker T. And The MG’s all day. Think Green Onions, etc... A nod to Steve Cropper and his contemporaries of the period. Makes for a fantastic Blues rhythm guitar tone, possibly more so than any other circuit in the series. \u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e1964 - You guessed it! Or did you?... This is Meet The Beatles all days for me. But can move into Revolver Territory depending upon how you utilize the High Pass filter. For me this circuit is the sound of an early 60’s Vox AC-30 (or 15, or even 10!). But it imbues that classic Vox Top Boost sparkle to whatever flows through it. Pepper or Magical Mystery Tour, etc... it is specifically designed to replicate the clean tones of the soldier from Seattle, Mr. Jimi Hendrix himself. One of the cleaner setting in the series, this circuit targets the cleaner side of Hendrix ala “Are You Experienced?” Add a little Univibe, and Bam!\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e1967 1\/2 - This one was tricky for me, as when I discovered it through trial and error it instantly Screamed Albert King’s “Born Under A Bad Sign,” which of course was released in late 1967... Since I had already determined that I would unofficially deem 1967 the “Hendrix” setting, I quickly decided to dedicate 1967 1\/2 to Albert King. Serendipitously, as I have found to be the case with other circuits in the series, using Jimi Hendrix as an example, if you play a song like “Highway Child” (also released in LATE 1967) through the 1967 1\/2 setting, you’ll find yourself there... As opposed to where you would be, playing those same riffs through the 1967 circuit... Sounds crazy, but try it for yourself!\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e1968 - This circuit is my dedication to Buddy Guy and Otis Rush. Although, play a bit of “Heller Skelter” through this circuit, and it’s as if you are in the studio on a sweltering night with the Fab Four during sessions for The White Album. The truth is, you can get some killer Otis tones out of the 1967 1\/2 circuit as well, but turn that high pass fully counterclockwise on the 1968 setting, and you’d be hard pressed to find a closer replication of Buddy’s tones from the Festival Express era, as well as his raunchy and explosive tones throughout his quintessential Junior Wells collaboration period.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThis sweet pedal is lightly used and works great. This is another go to setting for me for anything Blues oriented which needn’t be heavy handed in its approach. One of the benefits here, as with all circuits in the series, is the way in which the particular harmonics of each circuit distinctly influences playing style. The circuit design of The Time Machine Preamplifiers Series excels in its ability to intensify responsiveness, while also injecting a  very specific character to the signal chain of the user.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e1971 - Calling all slide players! This circuit was designed as an homage to Keith Richards, particularly focusing on his early 70’s tones. That said, you can go full on T-Rex especially when hitting the front end of “The Five” with another Preamplifier, boost or overdrive pedal... But of all the circuits in the series this one does something quite special when met with a slide guitar... In that it imparts sustain without obscuring the purity of tone with unwanted compression or dirt. It keeps the tone on the edge of breakup, all the while increasing sustain. A slide players dream. I have a feeling Steel players are gonna love this one too.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e 1972 - Utilizing the same transistor in the second stage of the 1967 setting from “The Four,” the equalization achieved in the design of this particular circuit imbues the 1972 setting with a decidedly softer playing feel than the other circuits on “The Five”... The aim being to recreate the equalization and saturation characteristics of Jimmy Page’s “cleanest” tones on Zep IV. Boost into, or out of this circuit, and you can easily go from clean to scream in an instant! Or crank up the balance knob and back off your instrument’s volume and you’re on stage with Donny Hathaway at the Troubadour (or The Bitter End) for the shows that became his legendary Live record...\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThis pedal has been \"used but not abused!\" It sounds great and works perfectly. But with the emergence of a young guitar hero hailing from Austin, Texas in the early 1980’s, the Blues Renaissance began in earnest. “The Six” meticulously recreates the sounds of that era, particularly focusing on the clean tones of SRV himself, as well as those of contemporaries like Albert Collins, and players who forged the way in the subsequent Blues explosion of the late 1990’s.. If only this pedal had existed when I was a teenager!... We think you’ll really like this one. This circuit  possesses more “gain” than anything “earlier” in the series chronologically speaking, but as with all other circuits in the series, it also possesses a high degree of headroom. This circuit recreates the sound of a guitar straight into a 300 Watt Dumbleland, like the one Stevie borrowed from Jackson Browne for the “Texas Flood” recording sessions. For the cleaner side of Stevie (ala “Lenny,” etc...), just roll back the volume on your instrument to 5 or 6... And bring your instrument’s volume back to 9 or 10 for those searing Albert King style riffs, rich with upper harmonics off of the record’s title track... As with all other circuits in the series, The high pass filter allows you to further accentuate specific harmonics in the equalization spectrum of the circuit itself.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e1986 - The Iceman Cometh! This circuit is my homage to the Iceman himself, the late great Mr. Albert Collins! The reduced sustain of the 1986 setting lends itself to copping the distinctive tones of the wry and mischievously playful Austinite. Collins of course tuned his guitar up to an open F Minor chord, and generally played with his capo at the 5th fret or above... So in addition to targeting the specific breakup and equalization characteristics heard on Collin’s records, great care was taken to impart into the circuit a degree of the “choked” note sound Collins was able to achieve via his unique tuning and playing style... Not to mention the sound of his Fender Super Reverb with all of the controls set to 10! \u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e1997 - For me, this is a particularly nostalgic setting, as it was my goal to recreate the sounds coming from the smokey stages while I was cutting my teeth as a 14 year old guitar slinger alongside the great Blues Masters at Smokin’ Johnnies, Cozy’s, B.B. King’s, and other blues clubs in Los Angeles in the late 1990’s. During this time period, I had the incredible honor of sharing the stage with the likes of Coco Montoya, Billy Preston, Jonny Lang, Nick Sharpe and The Lucky Stiffs, Stevie Gurr, Richie Hayward, “Guitar Jack” Wargo, John Marx, Louisiana “Guitar” Red, Joe Houston, “Screamin”James Norton... To name a few.
