The dbx 172 SuperGate is a professional analog noise gate / expander / ducker from 1990s, made by dbx Professional Audio.
It’s a 2-channel dynamics processor designed mainly for:
- Cleaning up drum mics
- Removing bleed/noise
- Tightening live sound
- Ducking background music under speech
- Creative gated effects
The unit is fully analog and VCA-based, using the classic dbx dynamics style that became common in studios and touring rigs.
The “SuperGate” name was dbx marketing for a more flexible and cleaner gate than their cheaper models.

- Fast and punchy
- Very effective on drums
- Can sound aggressive
- More character than modern transparent digital gates
