You know it. You love it. The blackface Bassman is one of the most famous and badass amps of all time. Over 60 years later and these amps are still turning heads. A tried and true classic. 50 Watts of damn good tone!
Now that we've talked a little about the 60's, let's talk about the 90's. Many older amps, including these blackface Bassman heads, were a lot easier to find and had not garnered quite the vintage mystique that they have nowadays. So a lot of players decided to have theirs modified. I know, today's collectors would shudder at the thought of a... gasp... non-original vintage Fender amp?! But it was a different time! It was the 90's! Nobody wanted a blackface Fender, they wanted a Mesa-Boogie!
So that brings us to today. Now we have here a beautiful 60's blackface Bassman head that some mad scientist from right here in Tennessee - our neighbors at Shiloh Music in Old Hickory, actually - did a full overhaul of and suped it the hell up! What it lacks in original vintageness, it makes up for in uniqueness and features. Now what are those features, exactly? Well, the original owner was smart enough to keep the original work order and schematic of all the modifications that were done to it, and kind enough to bring it to us! (see pictures)
Right off the bat, you'll notice that this thing has an overdrive channel. Well, that's a big difference right there from the Bassman you know and love. This thing has some serious muscle in the gain department. Fender who? This thing sounds like more of a Dual Rectifier than a Bassman.
You'll also notice that the inputs for the original Normal channel have been repurposed to be the effects loop Send and Return jacks, and there is a second EQ section on the rear panel for the overdrive channel. Tons of tweakability within the EQ sections on this amp, so you can get a nice sparkly scooped clean tone and then smack those mids when you switch over to the drive section.
The features on this amp are almost endless, it's like the original owner handed it to his tech and said "give it everything I could ever want."
