Where to even start! The Rockman name has become synonymous with some of the greatest guitar tones to grace some of your favorite records of the 80's and onward. The legendary multi-effect that's practically your Quad Cortex's great grandpa. So beloved that it even got a micro sized revamp this past year from MXR. But, folks this ain't just your standard Distortion Generator unit. This is the classic Distortion Generator AND the incredible Sustainor dual rack with the foot controller! All in working condition.
Originally designed by Tom Scholz of Boston (a band which helped to make the unit famous), the Rockman lineup were all state of the art units. Beginning with the Distortion Generator, you're instantly met with a pleasantly familiar set of controls. From left to right you've got sustain, distortion harmonics, a 3 band EQ, Auto Clean and Phase Notcher buttons, as well as a treble boost and output volume. Moving on over to the Sustainor side, you've got a heck of a lot more options.
This unit can be more easily broken into 4 main sections. Preamp/compressor, smart gate, distortion/filters, and finally output. In the preamp and compression section you will find, drum roll please, exactly that! A handy little slider for your preamp gain and a switch that controls compressor or "sustain" amount. Up next we got the smart gate and folks let us tell you, this was a game changer when it came to keeping ones playing sounding clean and noise free.
Onto the part you came for. Distortion! Here you'll find your various modes and gain amounts that are individually assignable per channel as well as a treble trim! Lastly comes the output section. The icing on the cake. A final set of basic EQ and level controls that give your sound that polished feel! Now that's a lot of controls to remember, and you likely won't be wanting to run to your rack mid set to change anything. In comes the foot controller, allowing you to make changes such as the channel and effect bypass with ease!
